The international township of Auroville is governed by an act of the Indian Parliament, which established the Auroville Foundation in 1988.

The Auroville Foundation has been approved by the Government of India under Section 35(1)(ii) and Section 35(1)(iii) of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

• Through Section(1)(ii), donations made towards scientific research are eligible for income tax relief.

• Through Section(1)(iii), donations made towards social sciences research are eligible for income tax relief.
